Thoughts of the project
Going through my blog and seeing the steps and process of developing ideas on ideas, making deep researches to find/create a decent concept for my Final project. Its amazing how I didn’t know about 3D,2D tracking, Rotoscoping, Green/ blue screen 12 weeks ago and now I’ve produced this crazy final using these techniques. The iLectures was so helpful in a way that it enabled US students to understand the tools that we needed to help us achieve a good Visual Effect, Sound Effects and lets not forget the outstanding techniques that we could use to make our Final production. I’ve had great times bonding with the class mates and helping out each other and giving advice on how to improve concepts.
I would like to take this moment to thank Mr Jarrad Gittos for the great iLectures and most importantly thanks to Mr Jirad Jhuboo for the positive energy in class and encouraging not only me but the whole class to achieve their goals in this project.
What I have Learned in this project?
Since Week 1 to Week 12, I’ve learned the:
Struggles when producing final video
The first problem I faced when creating my final was the lighting, my first scenes i shot was located in my Kitchen and the lighting was low and it created more contrast and shadows in my scene. To resolve this problem I had to try out many colour corrections, example; Levels, Curves, Brightness & contrast adjustment, photo filter and finally Colour fitness. With all those colour correction it took so much time to pre render. Other constraints occurred was I couldn’t get anyone to film my scenes or even act in them (Cause im a international Student and the small group people I know are always busy) so I took the challenge and directed and acted for the whole video except for my last scene where the camera was rotating around me, I had someone filming that part. It was a bit difficult to get myself in a moving scene when I was running so I had to make still shots and added a wiggle effect. I had to mask out some objects in some of my scenes and send them to front cause when applying the lightning effect onto the actor it tends to overlay on objects and its gave an unrealistic feel, and as you know I had to mask frame by frame and that took way too much time. My last location where the actor teleports to ‘The Future” that day when i was filming there was so many people and from my place to that location is like 2hr 30min drive in a BUS so theres no chance of reaching there early before the public does, so In my shots I had to mask them out and add a motion tracking to the masked layer, BUT the layer wasn’t realistic enough it was moving out of place so I had to re-position the key frames perfectly. Last problem was my background audio, It was difficult to synchronise my 2 audios perfectly together cause one audio is funk and the other one is a dramatic audio so I think you can understand the difference and the struggle, so to resolve it i had to edit the audio on Virtual dj and it came out strongly.
Change to my Final project
In my final I made a few last minute alterations, the first change I did was the SPEEDING effect, I added lightning to give a ‘FLASH’ look and rather then adding layer of Fast blur I decided to act out the running scene then boost up the scene with layer remapping to give the realistic effect as if the actor is running that fast, for a final touch I inserted Force Motion Blur which targets only the motion in the scene (actor) without having to mask out the actor and adding blur to it cause that would have taken ages. For my outside scene where the actor is running Mr Jirad to me to add a dust/smoke effect to contribute to the effect. The last changes did was in the Futuristic scene, I added new Aircrafts in the scenes and I also changed/add camera commands. When finalising my project I got this great idea of adding a Intro and a Outro, so I shared my concept with my lecturer Jirad and now its in my final production.
I really enjoyed this unit despite the struggles, The journey was long but I’ve learned so much about Composition & Effects in these 12 weeks and I’m really proud on how my final production turned out, really hope to get more of these projects next semester. PEACE.
Fast man begins as an ordinary guy trying out Coffee for the first time. After an instant sip he turns so hyperactive gaining super fast abilities as a result. Little does he know of the true powers running through his veins, as he speeds outside where suddenly his speed motion force initiates a shockwave which teleports him from the present to the future of endless possibilities.

In this lecture which is the final lecture for this unit, We’re suppose to create a breakdown of our final production and the lecture shows us how to breakdown all of our layers to show the process of our compositions (film) so the viewer can understand the techniques behind the scenes.
So basically Jarrad gave some good techniques we can use when doing our breakdown, he gave us 2 options on how to start and option 1 was to render sequences of footages and the 2 option was to use still frames. He chose still frames. If using the still frame option we have to save (export) from original layer till the ones where we’ve applied effects step by step, then we need to import the images into a new composition and place them accordingly to our process and Jarrad advised to add name the images process stage so the viewers can understand what going on and also he also suggested to add a Mask transition to see the change of each images perfectly. After all, we just have to render and we’ve got our-selfs a Breakdown.
The lecture is base on motion typography, in the beginning of the lecture Jarrad shows a inspiring example of creative intro scene using of typography motions and those intros was from Popular movies like ‘James Bond’, ‘Sherlocks Homles’ ect.. That’s a perfect way to get us into the lecture.
Jarrad goes through some drawing knowledge and how early title sequences can created a unique combination of title sequences techniques in films and all intros draw on existing techniques to communicate the meaning, tone or feel of the film. Really comes down to how we envision to communicate our ideas for example the James bond intro has a major relation to the movie itself and its visually giving the audience the feel and tone of movie before it begins.
During the process of making my 30sec movie in this unit, I wanted to create a cool intro and by listening to this lecture I made some adjustments according to the tips Jarrad gave like ” Create intro that reflects on your idea” and finally i got a cool typography intro. (see intro below)
Now back to the lecture, there was a part where Jarrad was talking about Kinetic Typography and he showed a cool example of a lyrical video of ‘Day light coming’ song and all of the sudden I got all hyped and started singing for no reason and that’s how strong the concept was.
To be honest most of the topics mentioned I already knew from my lasy semester unit Motion Graphics we had many lectures about typography techniques and the history of motion typography. Im not saying i didn’t learn nothing from this lecture there was some parts I didn’t know and the lecture was wake up call of how much typography can contribute to a film and it motivated me to make a great intro for my project.
Last semester Motion Typography project (see video below)..
I researched on how to make my motion intro more compelling like the typography techniques I could use to make a better motion.
A small kinetic tutorial:
Text Transition Tutorial:
The lecture targets Colour Grading. Color grading is the process of altering and enhancing the color of a motion picture, video image, or still image either electronically, photo-chemically or digitally. The photo-chemical process is also referred to as colour timing and is typically performed at a photographic laboratory. Jarrad showed a video for the intro of the topic and I found that a smooth way to get us into the lecture without getting lost, continuing from that another interesting part was when he was talking about the uses of colour grading and how its used to correct shots match/blends scenes together without having to re-shoot footages in the perfect and same lighting type. To keep us deep into the understand of the topic, in the middle of the lecture Jarrad showed more video examples of Colour grading effects in movies like Lord of the Rings and some random colour correction videos. The topic which I personal find compelling and important is the technicals given when using colour grading. The lecture continues in detailed which I will debrief in my Learn section.
Jarrad gave some good advice of the technical use of colour grading.
Colour grading is possible because each pixel of colour contains data information on brightness, contrast and RGB colour, which is called Colour depth or bit depth. this depends on the bit number-you’d see the difference over years of computer colour-4, 8, 16, 24 bit colours (game demonstrate this), the higher bit number is the more colour data is stored-currently the highest colour bit number is 24, with 32 bit storing an extra 8 bits of data for opacity.
I learned how to use Color Finesse on After Effects (suggested by Jarrad) and it really helped with some of my colour problems i was having in my footages.
The 3.46 minute video Jarrad showed as an example when preparing for our video and the tips and techniques was very helpful, one of the main tip i would use I reducing the contrast on my camera to make colour correction more effective.
I wanted to explore more about Colour grading and the technics used to make cool colour effects and how tips on how to blend colour within two footages.
The iLecture is base on Visual Effects. In filmmaking,is the processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shot. involve the integration of live-action footage and generated imagery to create environments which look realistic, but would be dangerous, expensive, impractical, or simply impossible to capture on film. using computer generated imagery have recently become accessible to the independent filmmaker with the introduction of affordable and easy-to-use animation and compositing software.Focal Press 2010.
I have learned that theres different ways to generate Visual Effects, For example:
The most part that I was stunned by is the models and miniature, I had no idea that in some movie they use small models of buildings and environments to composite in real footages and its a great way to create realistic/dangerous effects like fire, smoke, floods or anything that can be difficult to create while filming in real footages.
Important notes: Composition effects requires mastering the matting process to blend effects into live action. Think about layering multiple elements together in After Effects. Put and effect on top (like Smoke), and you want it to appear behind and object you will need to create and alpha matte mask of the object, so you can subtract layered elements of the smoke to make it appear ‘behind’ the object. You may need to track these effects into the footages to get them to follow an object. Combination of tracking + rotoscoping mask generation will allow you to composite most effect.
I further explored the world of miniature & models cause i find it so inspiring. I went on youtube to find the techniques of using miniature & models and how they blend into real footages.
The video got me like WOOOOOW, the level of creativity implied in each miniature is crazy and just to see movies that used miniatures & models is unreal and that shows how much visual effects is improving with new technologies nowadays.
